The Whole Foods supermarket in Jericho didn't have electricity Tuesday, but it still had one customer: Long Island Food Not Bombs, a food-recovery group that takes unsaleable but still edible food from supermarkets and distributes it to food pantries and the hungry.

It’s back-to-school season and students need their school supplies, but for many Long Island families this can be a costly burden to overcome. Purchases like notebooks, backpacks, sneakers, etc… add up creating a heavy burden on many families struggling in this recession.

As we near the 5-year anniversary of our founding this July, Long Island Food Not Bombs is now sharing tens of thousands of pounds of groceries each week! We're also sharing other necessities like clothing, hot meals, school supplies, toys and toiletries to folks in need here in our own community. There are two factors to why Long Island Food Not Bombs is able to do what we do.
