Mirschel Park Community Direct Action Gardening Project

From May 29th-31st Long Island Food Not Bombs will be revitalizing Mirschel Park (off of Atlantic Ave, ( one block West of Terrace Ave. ). We will be cleaning up trash, planting flowers and we might even paint a mural.

We hope you join us, we hope you bring your friends and we hope that you spread the word. Together we can create something amazing. Together we can start something incredible.

If you have flowers or pretty trees that you'd like to plant please bring them. We need as much as we can get. If you have garden tools that you’d like to share for a day please bring those as well.

Everyone is welcomed to come and plant and we will create special activities for young children who would like to get involved as well.

History:

Last year the community of Hempstead and Long Island Food Not Bombs cleaned up a massive abandoned lot adjacent to the Hempstead Train Station. We cleared out over 50 bags of trash, pulled out weeds, tilled the soil, created walkways and planted thousands of beautiful flowers for the whole neighborhood to enjoy.

Unfortunately, the Town of Hempstead illegally bulldozed our garden before much of anything really got to grow. Not only did they bulldoze our garden but they removed the top soil and laid construction debris across the lot to prevent us from ever gardening there again.

The Town did this to make a point, a point that the Town gets to tell the community what to do. We believe it should be the other way around. We believe that the community of Hempstead deserves better and that the Town needs to start working for the community.
