Hurricane Hempstead! Join LIFNB for this Sunday's Hemsptead Food Share as We Weather Irene!

Long Island Food Not Bombs Hurricane Hempstead Food Share

*Updates as of Saturday, Aug.27th @10:30pm*

Emergency Relief Services:

Long Island Food Not Bombs is one of 3 organizations that has been asked by the DHS and Nassau County Emergency Services to help provide food relief services during and after the storm. Basically, in the event of the worst we've been asked to help supply emergency shelters with food. So, in that event, we're going to need as much help as we can get on Monday, Tuesday, etc…

Emergency Food Shares Today in Hempstead @5pm & Bed-Stuy @3pm:

In addition to our regular Bed-Stuy Food Share (today at 3pm) we'll also be organizing an additional food share at our Hempstead location, tonight at 5pm. If you are interested in participating in this event, please call us asap - 631.223.4370. We'll be organizing pickups from 12:30pm-5pm in preparation.

Hurricane Hempstead, Sunday August 28th:

Unfortunately, Hurricane Irene currently appears to be making landfall in Nassau county at 2pm tomorrow - the exact time of our Hempstead food share. Regardless, a few of us will still be out there to offer aid to anyone who gets stuck. If possible, we'll also be suppling emergency shelters in Nassau County with extra food and materials.

This storm will be terrible, and we ask that anyone thinking about joining us to not make that decision lightly! We'll be taking every precaution we can, but tomorrow will still be extremely dangerous. If it is something you're interested in doing we ask that you only do so after talking to Vinnie or I directly on the phone. Our number 1 priority is everyone's safety so please don't just try and stop on by tomorrow without consulting us first.

Everyone be safe!

Join Long Island Food Not Bombs for our Hempstead Food Share this Sunday @2pm as we weather Hurricane Irene! Sounds crazy? Well, maybe it is, but hunger doesn’t take a day off and neither do we. In fact, in the five-year history of Long Island Food Not Bombs, we’ve never missed a single food share!

That’s right, we’ve weathered hurricanes, blizzards, floods, hail storms and even an earthquake this past Tuesday! So this Sunday @2pm, grab your bathing suit or your all-weather-parka and swing on down to the Hurricane Hempstead Food Share. We’ll be there no matter what!

Additionally, there are two more very important things we’d like to say to everyone joining us this Sunday.

First, and above all, stay safe! If you don’t feel comfortable driving or coming to the food share, don’t. If you do want to come, there will likely be many flooded roads, trees down and terrible drivers in your way. It might be a good idea to give yourself some extra time when you leave your home and you might also want to check the traffic reports. If you get stuck anywhere, need assistance, or can’t do your pickups please call the hotline 631.223.4370. We’ll be there to help you out!

Second, lets have fun. There’s going to be severe wind, we’re going to get soaked, and the clean up is going to be terrible – so lets at least have some fun with it! Feel free to bring a bathing suit, shower cap, or your rubber ducky. Oh, and get ready for wet cardboard wrestling.

In Hurricane Hempstead Solidarity,
JonSTeps & Long Island Food Not Bombs

P.S. – If you can’t make it out this Sunday and want to help, please consider organizing a school supplies collection with your friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc… We could really use your help this year with our Back-2-School drive!
